1970 Mustang Boss 429 – Part 3

So following a long break over Christmas, where I couldn’t do any building, the Mustang is coming along nicely. I painted the chassis and undercarriage, and finalised the interior tub. I put colour on the body (Tamiya “French Blue” (TS10)) and after about 2 hours of masking, managed to include the black feature stripe around the body, which I think came up pretty well.

I also managed to design and incorporate another little fun and interesting piece to this build – a hood support rod. You know, that rod that some cars have that holds the hood open. I’m pretty sure the actual car didn’t have one, but the way the model is designed, the hood won’t stay open by itself unless it’s at a full 90º, which in my opinion looks less realistic that the inclusion of my support rod.

1970 Mustang Boss 429 – part 2

One thing I really wanted to do with this kit was to wire up the engine. I’d tried it once before, but the wire I used was far too thick. I’m pretty sure I used 22 AWG (aka 22 gauge) wire, when what you really need is 30 gauge. I found it once on the Jaycar website, but I ended up getting it from Wiltronics.

Not being an expert on cars or engines, I needed to do a lot of research before I started on this little project. So I looked at photos of a real engine from a 1970 Mustang, and I looked at modelcarmags forums to see what other modellers have done.

1970 Mustang Boss 429 – part 1

This is another kit that my wife got me for my birthday this year. As they say, each kit is just practice for the next one, so with this kit, I’m trying to incorporate all the mods I’ve attempted on different kits in the past – plus some new ones. Being a fan of muscle cars, I loved the look of this kit from the second I laid eyes on the box.

In addition to trying out all the mods I’ve done before on this kit, I’m also trying something new – opening the doors. Strangely, getting the hinge right was the easy part. Joining the actual door with the interior tub cut-out is proving to be the hard part.

1970 Pontiac Firebird – Part 1

I’m a big fan of 1970’s muscle cars, which you may have picked up from my other posts. About a year ago, my gorgeous wife bought me this Revell kit which I’ve finally managed to start, after completing the 1958 Plymouth Belvedere a.k.a “Christine”.

The engine in this kit is pretty much standard, but for once I was able to spray the engine instead of brush painting it. At this stage, I still don’t have an airbrush, so I’m using Tamiya rattle cans. I used French Blue for the engine and Italian Red for the body with a Semi Gloss Black stripe.

Trashed

The other day, I trashed my first model. I don’t mean that I damaged it in some way, I mean it went in the bin. I tried and tried to make the damn thing work, but in the end, modelling is supposed to be fun, and this model was “anti-fun”. I tried for TWO days to get the front axle to attach to the steering arm, but in the end, not even super glue could hold the thing together!

I was a big fan of Revell back in the day, and in my opinion, they still make some great kits. But in this case, I sensed trouble from the start. My main kits of choice is cars, and in general, the engines are all put together the same way – with all the pieces cast in the same shapes – regardless of whose kit it is.
